That old guy at the bus station in Knoxville changed how I pack

I was waiting for a Greyhound in Knoxville last spring and this older dude, maybe 70, had this beat up duffel bag. He pulled out a whole camping setup - stove, tent, sleeping bag - all from one bag. He told me he rolls his clothes instead of folding and uses those compression cubes, saved him like 30% more space. Has anyone else found a cheaper alternative to those name brand compression bags?

Did you happen to catch if he was using actual compression cubes or just rolling everything tight? Because cheap mesh bags and a good roll might do the same thing for a lot less money.

That bit about rolling clothes and compression cubes is interesting, but I'm curious what kind of stove he had. Was it one of those tiny isobutane ones or a full on camp stove that folds flat? I've tried the rolling method and it works okay for t-shirts and jeans, but I can never get my heavier hoodies or a winter coat to compress down enough without a vacuum bag. Did he mention how he packs bulky stuff like that, or was his whole setup just summer camping gear?
