Showerthought: I chose a $9 hostel bunk over a $45 motel room in Austin and slept better than I have in months
Last month I was in Austin for a weekend and had to pick between a $9 dorm bed at a hostel off Congress or a $45 motel room out near the airport. The motel looked safer on paper, but the airport spot was a 40 minute bus ride from everything I wanted to see, and that bus ran once an hour on Sundays. I went with the hostel bunk, which felt like a gamble at the time. Turns out the room had six beds, everyone was asleep by 11, and the guy in the bunk below me was a line cook who pointed me to a taco spot with $2 breakfast tacos. I spent $18 total on food that weekend and walked everywhere. The whole trip came in under $70 not counting the bus from Dallas. Has anyone else picked the cheaper shared room over a private one and had it work out, or did I just get lucky with quiet roommates?
