Overheard a guy at the airport lounge talking about flight delay insurance

I was killing time at O'Hare last month and some dude was bragging to his buddy about pocketing $300 from some insurance because his flight got canceled. Never heard of this before. He said it costs like $10 per trip and covers weather and mechanical issues. Has anyone actually used one of these policies and gotten paid out without a fight?

Yeah that thing about pocketing $300 hit home for me. I had a similar deal through my credit card actually, didn't even know I had it until my flight from Boston got canceled for a busted engine. Filed the claim online, sent them the cancellation notice and my new boarding pass, and they paid out like $250 within two weeks. No fight at all. The key for me was keeping all my receipts and taking screenshots of the airline's text messages about the cancelation. Just make sure you read the fine print on what's covered, some of them won't pay if it's just a minor delay or if the airline gives you a voucher.

Fair point, but I've had the exact opposite experience with those credit card perks. Had a similar delay once and the fine print was like reading a legal doc, ended up with a $50 travel credit instead of cash. Guess it really depends on the card and how bad the airline messes things up.
