My old backpacking trick from 2018 still saves me $30 a night
Honestly, back when I was hopping between hostels in Barcelona and Madrid, I figured out you can just walk into a hotel lobby after 10 PM and ask for their spare room rate. Most front desk people will give you a cash price that's half what you'd see on Booking dot com. Tried it again last week in Portland and got a room for $45 instead of the listed $80. Has anyone else done this or do I just get lucky a lot?

yo fr this is a real thing that still works lol i did it in seattle last month during that big convention weekend. walked into a hilton at like 11pm and the guy at the front desk gave me a room for $60 when every other hotel was charging $150+. i think night shift people just wanna make a sale and get you outta there fast.

Did you just walk in and ask for their cheapest rate or did you have to haggle a bit? I tried something similar once in Denver but they wanted to stick me at full price even at 1am.
