My hostel locker broke open in Barcelona and I lost half my stuff

Three weeks ago I was staying at a cheap hostel in Barcelona and the locker I put my backpack in just broke open at night. The latch was one of those cheap combination locks built into the door and it popped right off when I hit a bump getting into bed. I woke up to find my bag open on the floor with some clothes missing and my travel adapter gone. The front desk guy just shrugged and said it happens all the time with those lockers. I ended up having to buy a cable lock from a shop down the street to use on their bigger storage cage. It only cost me 8 euros but still a pain to deal with at 2am. Has anyone else had a hostel locker fail on them and what did you do to keep your stuff safe after that?

honestly yeah those built in locker locks are basically worthless. I just use a small padlock I brought from home on everything now.
