My cheap bus ticket in Lisbon turned into a 5 mile walk

I was in Lisbon last fall and bought a 24-hour transit pass for 6 euros, thinking it was a steal. The pass stopped working at 11 PM (the machine just beeped), and I was stuck across town with no cash for a taxi. I ended up walking back to my hostel near Rossio Square, which took over an hour. Has anyone found a good backup plan for when a budget transit card fails at night?
