My buddy from Colombia set me straight about hostels

I was bragging to my coworker Jorge about scoring a $12 bed in a hostel in Medellin. He just laughed and said I was paying gringo prices. He showed me how he books direct with smaller pensones outside the tourist zones for like $5 a night. Hit different because he grew up there and knows the real numbers. Been rethinking all my hostel bookings since that conversation. Anyone else get called out by a local like that?

A buddy of mine from Austin got wrecked by a local in Mexico City. He paid like 20 bucks for a room near the Zocalo and some guy at a taco stand told him his cousin rents the same kind of room for 8. My buddy ended up moving to a place in La Condesa the guy set him up with. Cheap and better neighborhood.
