My brother swore by hostel kitchens for saving money, I was wrong to doubt him
He told me last year that cooking your own meals in hostel kitchens can cut food costs by half. I finally tried it during a trip to Portland last month and saved about $40 in three days. Has anyone else found specific hostels with better kitchen setups than others?

Nah man, hostel kitchens are usually nasty. I'd rather pay extra.

Kitchens vary a lot, that's true. I've found hostels with newer renovations usually have clean stoves and sharp knives, makes a big difference. Worth checking recent photos on the booking site before you go.
