I just found out hostels in Berlin used to cost under $10 a night in the 90s

I was looking at an old travel guide from 1997 at a library sale and saw a price list for hostels. A bed in a dorm was listed at 9 Deutsche Marks, which is about $5 now. I remember paying over $30 for the same thing last year. It's wild how much budget travel has changed in just a few decades. What's the cheapest hostel you've found in a big city recently?

Budget travel" now just means less expensive, not cheap.

Totally true. Remember when hostels were ten bucks a night? Now they're fancy pods for fifty. A "budget" flight just means it didn't cost a grand. The whole thing got gentrified. Cheap travel is basically dead unless you're sleeping on a bench.
