I heard a guy at the Denver airport say he always books a 'throwaway' hotel night for long layovers
He was telling his friend he books the cheapest refundable hotel near the airport for a 12 hour layover, just to get a real bed and a shower. Cancels it before the free cancellation window closes if he doesn't end up needing it. Costs him nothing if plans are solid, but gives him a cheap backup plan for like $50 instead of sleeping on the floor. Has anyone actually tried this? Seems risky if the cancellation policy is strict.

Seriously? That's just asking for trouble when the hotel catches on and charges you anyway.

Ever think that was just gaming the system? I used to, but honestly, it's pretty smart if you read the fine print. I got stuck overnight once and would have killed for a cheap backup plan like that. Now I always check refundable rates for long waits, just in case.
