Hot take: hotel breakfast buffets are a trap for budget travelers

I spent $18 on a sad hotel breakfast in Nashville last month, then realized I could grab a muffin and coffee from the gas station next door for $4. The buffet eggs were rubbery too. Has anyone else found better cheap eats right outside the hotel lobby?

Oh I feel you on this, the hotel breakfast trap is real. Paid $22 in Minneapolis for scrambled eggs that tasted like cardboard and some sad yogurt. Now I always scope out a local diner or bakery before I even check in, way better food and half the price.

Jumping on what Margaret said about scoping out local places beforehand, that saved me big time in Austin last year. Found this tiny taco spot two blocks from my hotel where I got breakfast tacos for like $7, way better than the $20 hotel spread.
