Hostel vs Couchsurfing in Barcelona last month

I had to pick between a $35 hostel near Las Ramblas or crashing with a local for free 20 minutes out. The hostel was loud and I barely slept, but the Couchsurfing host wanted me to hang out every night which was awkward. Has anyone else found one option way better for actually saving money?

Right? My Couchsurfing host in Berlin took me to this underground club where cover was 15 euros and drinks were like 8 bucks each. I was too polite to say no so I just kept buying rounds. Hostel would have been way cheaper even if it was loud. Plus he wanted to cook together every night and I just wanted to crash after walking all day. Felt like I was on a date I didn't ask for.

That "hang out every night" part got me. I did Couchsurfing once in Paris and the guy wanted me to meet all his friends at a bar. Ended up spending more on drinks than I would have on a hostel.
