Going without travel insurance on my backpacking trip feels right, anyone else?

I've been traveling through Central America for two months and decided to skip buying travel insurance to save money. Most folks online scream that it's essential, but I've pocketed like $150 so far. I keep a small stash of emergency cash instead. Last week, I twisted my ankle in Guatemala and paid $30 for a local clinic, which was cheaper than any deductible I've seen. My travel buddies say I'm risking it all for a few bucks, but nothing bad has happened yet. Do you think insurance is overrated for budget trips? I'm starting to doubt the hype. Let me know your thoughts, lmao.

That's a pretty cheap clinic visit, but what about a real hospital stay or getting flown home? A bad infection or broken bone could wipe out your emergency cash in one bill. Insurance isn't for the twisted ankles, it's for the "oh crap" moments that cost thousands.

Seriously, this is the real talk right here. I skipped insurance once thinking my savings was enough, then got a bad cut needing stitches overseas. The bill was insane, like five times what I had set aside. That clinic visit is nothing compared to a real emergency. You don't realize how fast a simple accident turns into a huge financial nightmare until it happens to you.

You're focusing on small wins while ignoring huge risks, like @miles_grant35 said. What if you needed surgery after a bus crash or got really sick? That clinic won't help then, and your cash stash disappears in one air ambulance bill. Is saving $150 worth betting your whole trip on nothing going wrong?
