Waste of cash: That $300 paint job in a can I fell for

I watched a few videos online about rustoleum and roller paint jobs for project cars. Sounded like a steal compared to a real paint booth. Tried it on my 1987 Volvo 240 wagon last summer. Cost me about $50 in paint and supplies plus a ton of sandpaper. Looked okay from ten feet for about three months, then it started peeling in big ugly sheets. Now I'm stuck with a half stripped car and the cost of a proper respray. Anybody had better luck with a different cheap paint method?

My buddy tried the same thing on his old truck, looked great for a week then flaked off like crazy.
