Unpopular opinion: buying a parts car is almost always a bad move

I kept hearing everyone say grab a whole second car for parts, but after buying a 1998 Civic for $500 I spent $200 hauling it and another 6 hours swapping a single alternator. Most of the parts were rusted or worn just like my main car. Why not just hit the junkyard for $40 and skip the headache?

Bought a $300 Volvo once, spent more on pizza delivery for the tow truck driver than the actual car.
