The $40 junkyard alternator that almost toasted my whole harness

I was all about grabbing the cheapest parts possible for my 91 Civic build in Fresno. Found a reman alternator for 40 bucks at a local pick-n-pull, figured it was a steal. After 3 days of weird voltage spikes, I pulled it and the regulator was shot, arcing inside the case. My buddy who runs a shop said he sees this all the time, cheap yard jewels always carry that gamble. Ended up spending 120 on a new one, but the burnt smell and near-fire sure taught me to test output before bolting anything in. Has anyone else had a bargain part go sideways like that?

Did you catch that bit in the original post about how the guy saved himself three trips back to the store just by plugging it in first? That's the kind of stuff they never tell you in the manual lol. I read somewhere that most people skip the test because they're in a hurry to get it mounted, but then they gotta take it down anyway. Honestly, if you've ever fought with a wall plate for an hour only to find out the wires are backwards, you know it's worth the extra five minutes.
