That junkyard coil spring that snapped on me at midnight last Tuesday

I was out in the driveway messing with my old Civic, trying to swap the rear springs for some take-offs I grabbed for $30. Got the passenger side done no problem, but the driver side snapped clean in half as soon as I put weight on it. Ended up having to jack the whole rear up and tie the control arm with a ratchet strap just to limp it back into the garage. Has anyone else fought a rusty spring that just gave up mid-job?

Used to think old springs were tough enough to handle anything. That Civic changed my mind real fast when that driver side snapped and sent the whole corner sagging. Now I just cut them off with a grinder before they get a chance to fight back.

Nah, a grinder just chews em up... I'd rather wrestle it off.
