Serious question, has anyone tried the dollar store oven cleaner trick on a grimy valve cover?
I was pulling the valve cover off my 1997 Civic project and it was caked in 20 years of oil gunk, so I figured I had nothing to lose and grabbed a $1.25 can of oven cleaner from Dollar Tree. Sprayed it down, let it sit for about 15 minutes, hit it with a nylon brush, and honestly most of the crud just slid right off in the driveway. I did it again on the intake manifold and same result, maybe 30 minutes total and almost no scrubbing. I know aluminum can get stained if you leave it too long, so I rinsed it fast with hot water and it came out clean with no pitting. Total cost was like two bucks and I saved myself a trip to the machine shop. Has anyone else used this stuff on aluminum parts, and did you run into any issues down the road?
