Rant: I was under my buddy's '91 Civic in his wet driveway when the jack stand shifted.
Now I won't even THINK about working on a car without putting the wheels I took off under the frame as a backup, just in case.

Ever think that extra step was overkill? I used to skip it until a close call like yours, and now I get why @troyjackson mentioned that "poor man's safety stand" name. It's just smart, not cheap.

Recalled reading that exact article years ago and did a double take when I saw your comment. The phrase "poor man's safety stand" stuck with me because it made me realize how many guys treat wood blocks or old jack stands like they're good enough. Had a buddy lose a finger when a block splintered under his truck, so that magazine warning hit different after that.
