Old timer at the junkyard told me to ignore the oil pressure sensor

I had a 98 Civic with a flickering oil light and this guy said just unplug it and run 20w50, so I did. Three months later the rod bearings went and now I'm swapping a motor this weekend. Anyone else get burned by some random advice from a stranger?
