My uncle swore by junkyard tires for budget builds, but now I'm paying for it.
He said spend $40 on used tires with good tread instead of $200 on new ones, but after two blowouts on my '92 Civic I'm wondering if that's really the way to go. Does the safety risk ever outweigh the money saved, or am I just unlucky with the ones I grabbed?

Take a closer look at those used tires next time, especially the date code on the sidewall. Even with good tread, tires older than 6-8 years get hard and brittle, which makes blowouts way more likely. I've seen plenty of junkyard tires with plenty of rubber left that are just too old to be safe on the road. Your uncle might have gotten lucky with fresh take-offs, but most people grab whatever looks decent without checking that date stamp. Your mileage may vary, but personally I'd rather hunt for a good sale on new budget tires than gamble with old rubber again.

My car's old enough that the tires have a birth certificate instead of a date code.
