My buddy swore by JB Weld for a cracked block, he was so wrong
Last spring I picked up a 1998 Civic for $600 with a known crack in the block near the starter. My buddy Dave, who's fixed like 20 hondas, told me to just slather JB Weld on it and it would hold for months. I followed his advice exactly, cleaned it, roughed it up, applied a thick layer, let it cure 24 hours. Fired it up, drove about 15 miles to grab parts, and it started weeping coolant before I even got home. The heat and vibration just blew it out. Ended up having to pull the whole engine and swap in a junkyard unit for $300 and a full weekend of my time. If I'd just listened to the forums about doing the repair right the first time, I'd have saved myself the headache. Has anyone else had a friend give them awful advice that cost them more than just doing it proper?

Three years ago my cousin tried to fix his dead alternator by wrapping the whole thing in duct tape and zip ties because some guy at a gas station swore it would get him home. He made it about four miles before the battery light came on and the car died in the middle of a busy intersection during rush hour. Cost him a tow, a new alternator, and a ticket for blocking traffic. I still bring that up every Thanksgiving. Some people just hear what they wanna hear and skip the part where you do the job right.
