Everybody keeps telling me to just swap a junkyard motor in, and that math never works out
Every time I post about my tired 1994 Civic in the local car group, somebody jumps in with "just grab a low mile motor from the pick and pull for $300 and you're done." I finally pulled my own receipts to show why that advice is junk. The motor is $300, sure, but then it's $180 for a timing belt and water pump kit, $90 for new mounts that are always roached, $60 for hoses and a clutch while it's out, plus $120 for a hoist rental and a weekend of my time. That's near $800 before I even find out the junkyard motor smokes too, which happened to a guy I know in Mesa who went through two of them in 5 months. The honest fix on my car was a $45 valve cover gasket and a $30 compression tester to figure out what was actually wrong first. So why do people keep parroting the swap advice like it's a cheat code? Is it just me seeing this everywhere?
