Why does nobody warn you that a $9 rice cooker takes 45 minutes to cook a single cup
I grabbed a $9 rice cooker from the clearance shelf at a Kroger in Cincinnati about two weeks ago, thinking I'd finally stop burning rice on the stove. The first time I used it, one cup of white rice took 45 minutes to finish, and the bottom was still crunchy. I tried three more times with different water levels, and the fastest batch still ran 38 minutes. Then I looked it up and found out these little cookers just keep the heating plate on low, so there's no real way to speed them up. I returned it after 9 days and went back to a pot on the stove, which takes 18 minutes flat. Has anyone found a small cooker that actually finishes rice in under 25 minutes, or is this just how the cheap ones work?
My buddy Dave bought one of those $12 ones at a Walmart in Dayton and had the same deal, took like 40 minutes for a cup. He ended up just using it for oatmeal since it can't really mess that up. The cheap ones all work the same way, just a dumb hot plate with no sensor.
