Tried making lentil soup with a $2 bag of split peas and ended up with a gelatinous blob that smelled like wet dog for three days

I followed a YouTube video from some guy named Chef Bob who said to simmer it for 90 minutes but I left it on low for 4 hours while I ran errands and came back to a pot that looked like a science experiment, so has anyone else had split peas turn into weird cement on them?

Wait, you left a pot of split peas simmering for four hours with nobody home? That sounds like a fire waiting to happen. I left a pot of chili on low once while I went to the store for fifteen minutes and came back to a black crust on the bottom. Four hours seems like your whole kitchen could have ended up like that weird cement you described. You are way braver than me for leaving a stove on that long.

Maybe it's not that deep though. People leave slow cookers on all day and nobody panics. Four hours on low with some water in there isn't exactly playing with fire.
