Took me three entire weeks to realize I was wasting $15 a week on bulk spices I never actually used.
I kept buying those big jars of cumin and paprika from the discount store in Tacoma because they seemed like a steal, but after cleaning out my pantry I found five half-empty containers that all expired over a year ago, so has anyone else just accepted that you probably need like a teaspoon of turmeric every six months?

Oh man, that's such a familiar feeling (she says, staring at her own collection of expired oregano). But I've gotta gently push back on one thing - turmeric actually keeps way better than most spices, especially if you buy it as whole dried root instead of powder. The ground stuff does lose potency after a year or so, but a sealed jar in a cool dark spot can still have plenty of flavor for way longer than six months. That being said, you're totally right that buying bulk jars of spices you only use a pinch of is a trap, I learned that the hard way with nutmeg.

Grind your own whole turmeric roots? Oh boy, here I am with a mini spice grinder and a mortar and pestle I bought for a "curry night" that turned into me eating plain rice because I couldn't find the recipe. But youre right, that whole root trick is genius, I just know Id buy a bag of it, use one piece, and then find it in the back of my cabinet next to a rock hard ginger root from 2022. And nutmeg is the ultimate trap, I have whole nutmegs I refuse to throw away because theyre "still good" but Ive never once actually grated one on purpose. Have you ever actually successfully used up a whole jar of any spice before it turned into dust?
