That time my freezer went out and I lost a full month of meal prep
Last August my ancient chest freezer finally gave up. I came home from work and found everything thawed out, bags of frozen veggies and chicken thighs sitting in warm water. I probably threw away about $60 worth of food I had prepped for the month. Now I keep a cheap thermometer in there and check it every few days. Has anyone else had a freezer fail on them mid-meal prep run?

Oh man, that sucks... I had a chest freezer do the exact same thing but it was way worse because I was storing a bunch of venison from a hunting trip my buddy gave me. Probably $200 worth of meat just gone... I still get mad thinking about it. What really got me though was the smell... took like a week to get the nasty smell out of the garage even after bleaching everything. Now I have this old school method where I just put a bag of ice cubes on top of everything and if they're melted I know something's off. It's not perfect but it works for me... I check it like once a week.

Is it really that big of a deal though? $60 bucks for a lesson on keeping a cheap thermometer seems like a pretty fair trade to me. I set my deep freeze to like -10 and call it good, never had an issue.
