That time I burnt chili so bad we ate cereal for dinner
I was in my tiny kitchen in Portland last fall trying to stretch a $6 bag of beans into a week of meals and got distracted by a phone call about my mom's hip surgery, and the whole pot turned into this blackened crust that smelled like a campfire for three days, anyone else ever ruin a budget meal so bad you had to pivot to whatever was in the pantry?

Oh man, I've definitely been there. Burnt chili is a special kind of kitchen tragedy because the smell just clings to everything like it's personally offended. I had to open all my windows and burn a candle for two days straight before my apartment stopped smelling like a bonfire. Pantry cereal dinners are honestly a rite of passage for anyone trying to stretch a grocery budget.

One time I burnt toast so bad the smoke alarm went off and my cat hid under the bed for hours.
