Ruined a whole pot of pinto beans by adding salt too early and had to start over at 9pm
Back when my wife and I first got married we were broke and living in a tiny place in Lubbock, and beans and rice was pretty much our whole dinner plan three nights a week. One Tuesday I dumped a big spoon of salt in at the start like an idiot, and those beans stayed hard as pebbles after two and a half hours on the stove. I panicked because that was our food for the week, so I ran to the corner market and grabbed another $1.79 bag of pintos and started completely over at 9pm. My grandma had always said salt goes in at the end but I figured I knew better, and that night I learned real quick who was right. Now I do a full pot, no salt till the beans are soft, then taste and season. Anyone got a trick for fixing beans that already got salted too early, or do you just toss them and start fresh like I did?
