My grocery bill dropped after a chat with the butcher at the Food Fair in Springfield.

I was buying chicken breasts for $8 a pound when he pointed me to the whole chickens for $1.50 a pound and showed me how to break them down. Now I get three meals from one bird for under $6 total. What's the best cheap cut of meat you've learned to cook with?

Honestly, how long does it take you to break down a whole chicken?

My buddy swears by pork shoulder now, it's crazy cheap.

Honestly, I gotta disagree with your buddy on that one. Pork shoulder is cheap for a reason - it takes forever to cook right and you end up trimming a ton of fat. I've done it a few times and it's good for pulled pork or tacos, but a whole chicken is way more versatile. You can roast it, grill it, shred it for sandwiches, use the bones for stock. Plus breaking down a chicken is like 5 minutes once you get the hang of it. Pork shoulder always leaves me with a fridge full of leftovers I gotta force myself to eat.
