My coworker laughed at me for buying bulk beans until she saw my grocery bill

At my office last month, Sarah saw me bring in a jar of dried chickpeas for lunch and said "you actually cook those? that's so extra." I just shrugged and told her it cost me about $1.50 for the whole week's worth of lunches. She was spending $12 a day on takeout salads. Three weeks later she came up to me and asked if I could show her how to meal prep because her credit card statement was brutal. Felt pretty good honestly. Has anyone else had someone judge your budget meals and then come around later?

@karenw90 that's a great point about society training us to think spending more equals doing it right. I had a buddy from college who used to roast me for buying whole chickens and breaking them down myself. Told me I was wasting my time. Then I showed him the math - a whole chicken costs like $6 and gives you 3-4 meals plus stock. He was spending $14 on a rotisserie chicken that barely lasted two meals. Now he texts me pictures of his chicken stock like he discovered fire. Funny how that works.

funny how people judge the "extra" stuff until they see the actual numbers. I've noticed that's just how our society works now. everyone is so used to convenience being the norm that they forget the basic stuff like cooking beans or packing lunch is actually the smarter move. it's like we've been trained to think spending more means doing it right. but give it a week or two of real math and the penny dropping hits hard. your coworker is probably telling someone else about how you "showed her the light" by now.
