My $20 immersion blender gave out halfway through a big batch of tomato soup

It started smoking and then just died, so I had to finish blending with a potato masher like a caveman. What's the cheapest immersion blender that actually lasts more than a year?

Reminds me you gotta buy the ones with metal shafts even at the cheap end. The plastic ones always overheat and die fast.

Oh man, did I learn this the hard way? Bought a cheap plastic shaft unit from a random brand on Amazon, and it literally melted itself after like three uses. The metal shaft ones just keep going, I've had a basic one for over a year now that cost maybe fifteen bucks and it's still running strong. I even dropped it off my workbench once and it just kept chugging along. Plastic ones get all wobbly too within a couple weeks, the metal stays tight.

Same thing happened with my old blender. Smoke started pouring out and it smelled like burning electronics. Used a whisk instead and my wrist was sore for a week. Metal shaft is the way to go for sure, but I'd also say look at the wattage. My cheap one had like 150 watts and it couldn't handle anything thicker than milk. Got one with 300 watts and it purees nuts and frozen fruit no problem. Do you think wattage matters more than the shaft material?
