I swapped beef for lentils in my chili to save $18 and my family noticed by bite three
I make a big pot of chili every Sunday and beef went up to $6.99 a pound at my store in Akron, so I tried dried lentils instead. A one pound bag costs $1.49 and I figured nobody would notice in something that spicy. My husband took one bite and asked what was different, then my son pushed his bowl away and made a sandwich. I spent $11 total on that pot versus the $29 it usually runs, and I ate chili for five days straight while they had sandwiches. The part that bugs me is the lentils tasted fine to me, maybe even better, and now I am cooking two dinners on Sundays like a short order cook. Has anyone gotten their family to actually accept a swap like this, or do you just make it and let them deal with it?
