Hot take: everyone acts like rice is always the cheapest option but it's really not

I saw a breakdown on some budgeting site that compared cost per calorie of different staples. Turns out potatoes in bulk are actually cheaper per serving than most rice brands when you factor in cooking time and fuel cost. I mean, rice is still cheap but people act like it's the undisputed king. Has anyone else looked at the numbers on this or am I just being too picky?

Oh great, now I have to factor in fuel cost too? Next someone's gonna tell me my instant ramen budget is a lie because I have to boil the water. "Rice is cheap" but have you seen the price of butter to make it not taste like cardboard? I mean if we're getting this granular, the real savings are stealing salt packets from fast food places. But seriously, potatoes are a solid move if you don't mind them going green and sprouting eyes in your pantry after three days. I've tried the whole bulk potato thing and ended up eating fries for every meal until I couldn't look at one without feeling sad.

Alright, @thead44, are we really fighting for our lives over a potato's shelf life now? Next thing you know, we'll need a spreadsheet just to decide if it's worth owning a stove.
