Guy at the laundromat saw my grocery bags and said 'that's a lot of beans for one dude'
Last Tuesday I was folding clothes at the Spotless Wash on 5th and this older guy nods at my two canvas bags sitting on the table. Both stuffed with dry pinto beans, lentils, and a big bag of carrots from the produce stand down the street. I laughed and told him I got the whole haul for $14 and change. He asked what I do with all of it, so I gave him the short version: Sunday I cook one giant pot, portion it into quart containers, and that's lunch and dinner for most of the week. I add whatever meat is marked down that day plus an onion and some cumin, and it costs me under a dollar a bowl. He just stared and said he'd been buying frozen dinners at $4 a pop thinking that was cheap. I pulled up my notes app right there and showed him the math. Got me wondering how many people never even run the numbers on what they actually eat. What's the one food you cook in bulk that actually tastes good on Thursday?
