Googled 'cheapest calories per dollar' and ended up down a rabbit hole about vegetable oil
I found some USDA data from 2023 that said a gallon of vegetable oil has like 12,000 calories for under $4, which is crazy efficient but also kind of gross if you think about eating it straight. Has anyone actually used that kind of stat to plan meals?

Ha, yeah I tried that whole "cheapest calories" thing in college. Lived off rice, eggs, and a huge Costco tub of vegetable oil for a couple months, actually worked pretty well if you don't mind everything tasting like deep fryer.

Wasn't there a guy on YouTube who tried that exact same thing but with a giant tub of lard instead of vegetable oil? He called it the "depression diet" or something, lived off it for a whole year. Said his cholesterol went through the roof but he saved like a thousand bucks a month on groceries. Made me think twice about how much I'm paying for olive oil when my grandpa probably used bacon grease for everything.
