Frozen veggies vs canned when the power went out for 4 days
Last month a storm knocked our power out from Tuesday to Friday in Raleigh. I had a fridge full of ground beef and chicken that I cooked on a camp stove the first night, but the frozen corn and peas were still mostly solid in the freezer. I threw them in a cooler with ice, but by day three they were mushy and smelled off. My neighbor swore canned veggies would have lasted longer and tasted fine, but I argued they cost more per pound and come with extra salt. I ended up cooking the thawed ones into a giant stew with beans and rice just to not waste them, and honestly it was fine. Which side do you land on when you're stuck without power, frozen stock that might thaw or paying up for canned that you can crack open anytime? Has anyone else had to make that call mid-emergency and regret it the other way?
