Used to just yank cords out by the plug, now I grab the connector after 2 dead HDMI ports

For years I'd pull on the cable itself when unplugging stuff. Fast forward to last month, my PS5 HDMI port died and the repair guy in Cleveland quoted me $85. Turns out the weight of the cord hanging off the port was doing damage every time I wrapped it tight around the console. Now I always grab the metal end, wiggle it gently, and keep a 6 inch extension cord attached so the weight never pulls straight down. Has anyone else cooked a port this way or am I the only dummy?
