Guy at the repair shop in Boise swore heat shrink tubing would outlast electrical tape on my laptop charger, and he was right
My MacBook charger cord frayed right at the brick about 3 months ago. I was just gonna wrap it in electrical tape like I always do, but a tech at a shop on Vista Ave in Boise said tape gets gummy and slides off within weeks, and to try heat shrink tubing instead. I grabbed a $6 kit off Amazon, slid a 3/8 inch piece over the tear, hit it with a hair dryer, and that thing has held up through 2 road trips and daily abuse in my backpack. The tape I put on my old phone cord lasted maybe 9 days before it peeled. Anyone else switch to heat shrink for cord repairs, or do you have something even better for that spot where the cord meets the plug?
Heat shrink on the charger brick is smart, I tried the same thing once and melted a chunk of the cord because I got too close with the hair dryer, so now my repair job has its own little scar. That said the tubing itself never moved, unlike the tape that always turned into a sticky mess in my bag. Takes a bit of practice but it's worth the extra minute.
