Vent: Stop telling people to replace parts before you test them
I fix up cheap cars on the side and this one thing drives me up a wall. Every forum thread turns into a parts cannon. Somebody posts that their 2003 Civic cranks but won't start, and within ten replies folks are saying fuel pump, then coil packs, then the whole ignition system. I bought a $12 noid light set two years ago and it has pointed me to the real problem every single time. Two months back a guy in my neighborhood had a no-start on a rusty Ranger he got for $800, and he had already spent $210 on a fuel pump he did not need. Turned out one injector was not pulsing and the harness plug was green with corrosion. I cleaned it with a wire brush and some contact spray, and the truck fired right up that afternoon. Testing first costs almost nothing and guessing costs real money when you are broke. What is your go-to cheap test tool that has kept you from buying parts you did not need?
