Vent: a guy at the Pull-a-Part in Tulsa showed me his $40 head gasket fix and I still can't decide if he's a genius or a hack
I was pulling a alternator off a wrecked Corolla at the Pull-a-Part in Tulsa on Saturday when the guy in the next row waved me over to look at his Civic. He had blown the head gasket and instead of pulling the head he dumped a bottle of sealant in, topped it off, and drove it 300 miles already. He swore it held at 4,000 miles on his last beater and only cost him $12 plus coolant. Half of me thinks that's a ticking time bomb that will cook the bearings, and the other half thinks for a $600 car it's the smartest money he ever spent. Where do you all draw the line on band aid fixes vs doing the job right?
Reminds me of a buddy who patched a cracked radiator with JB Weld and drove that truck for two more years. He finally sold it running, and the guy who bought it never knew. Sometimes a cheap fix outlives the car and sometimes it leaves you on the shoulder of I-44, so it really comes down to what the car is worth to you.
