The $12 harbor freight multimeter that lied to me for 6 months
Finally traced my truck's intermittent crank no-start to a bad ground in the fuse box, but the cheap meter kept reading 12.4V when it was actually dropping to 9V under load, so how many of you have actually tested your cheap test gear against a known working unit before trusting it?
....and that's exactly why I kept blaming the starter, the battery, even the damn ignition switch. Wait, so it was reading 12.4V the whole time but actually dropping to 9V under load? That's not even a little off, that's like the meter just making stuff up. I mean, I get cheap tools can be off by a few hundredths, but a 3.4 volt swing that it completely missed? That's not a calibration issue, that's just lying to your face. I've got the same blue $12 one and now I'm honestly scared to trust any reading it gives me without double checking it against my buddy's Fluke first.
