Question about why everyone buys new brake calipers when a $14 rebuild kit does the job
My neighbor dropped $180 on a remanufactured caliper for his 2003 Corolla after the piston seized up at 140k miles, and I told him he just wasted most of that money. A $14 kit with a new seal, boot, and piston from the parts store plus an hour of work in my garage got mine working fine three winters ago in Cleveland, and I have not had a single leak since. Why do people keep swapping the whole caliper when the bore is almost always still good, is it just the fear of messing up the rebuild or do you all actually think the kit is junk?
Get why people just buy the whole thing though, one little scratch or burr in that bore and your new seal is toast in a month. You got lucky with yours but a reman unit comes tested with a warranty, so if it fails you just swap it out instead of pulling the thing apart a second time. Plus not everyone has a garage, the tools, or the time, and paying a shop to rebuild costs more in labor than the part ever would.
