Just realized my $35 offer on a non running lawn tractor was a dumb way to figure out the engine was seized
I paid $35 for a Craftsman lawn tractor off a guy in Modesto who swore it just needed a battery, and after two weekends of swapping parts a retired small engine guy told me to pull the spark plug and try turning the flywheel by hand. Sure enough it would not budge, so I stopped buying parts and started pulling the head instead. How do you all check for a locked up engine before handing over cash on a cheap project machine?

Did you pull the plug and try spinning the flywheel before you bought it, or did you just trust the guy when he said it needed a battery? That trick takes like thirty seconds and it would've saved you the two weekends of parts swapping. I've learned the hard way to bring a socket and a breaker bar to any sale, even if the seller swears up and down the motor turns free. What got you to stop throwing parts at it instead of chasing the carb or the coil like most people would?
