Used to think mortar color didn't matter that much

Then I had to repoint a 1920s brick wall in Portland last week and the owner insisted on matching the original lime mortar color exactly. Spent 3 hours mixing samples and turns out a slightly off shade stands out like a sore thumb from 20 feet away. Has anyone else had a client get picky about mortar color matching?

Mortar color is honestly overrated once the weather hits it for a couple seasons. Let that old Portland grime settle in and nobody will notice a difference from the street.

Ngl, I'm on the owner's side here. Good mortar matching is the difference between a job that looks professional and one that looks like a homeowner special from the 90s.
