Unpopular take: a $9 grout bag beat my $40 hawk for repointing a chimney in Tulsa
I hit 500 bricks repointed last month and the thing that actually got me there was a cheap grout bag from a big box store, not any fancy tool. My old hawk kept dropping mortar down the flue chase on a 1920s house in Tulsa, so I switched for the mortar joints and never went back. It is slower to fill, but I waste way less mud and my joints are cleaner. Anybody else ditched their hawk for small jobs or am I the only one?
Man, same here. I keep a grout bag in the truck for touch-ups on old brick and it saves me every time. The hawk still comes out for big flat stuff but for anything above my head I'm not fighting it.
