Switched from string lines to lasers about 3 years back

Ngl I used to spend forever pulling string lines for every course when doing block work. Then this old timer on a job site in Denver showed me his laser level setup and I was hooked. Got myself a basic rotary laser for like $120 and it cut my setup time by half at least. Anyone else made that switch or still prefer the old school way?

Your mileage may vary but switching to a laser was the best move I made on my own work. String lines always got bumped or sagged on me, especially in windy conditions after lunch. The rotary laser just sits there and gives you a consistent plane to work off, no guesswork. Took me a weekend to get comfortable with it but after that I never looked back. Only thing I will say is keep the batteries charged, that bit me once when I was in the middle of a pour. Solid investment for less than $150 if you shop around.

See, I went the opposite way. Lasers just add another point of failure for me (batteries dying, the level getting knocked off, the receiver getting finicky in bright sunlight). String lines take a minute to set right but once they're up, they're up until I knock them down myself. Also, that $150 laser is fine for a deck or a patio, but try shooting a grade across 100 feet of wet concrete and tell me the cheap ones hold up. I'll take a tight string over a blinking dot any day.
