PSA: switched my mortar mixing from a hoe and board to a paddle mixer, and my joints finally stopped failing inspection
I do a lot of block work around Columbus and for a long time I mixed everything by hand on a board with a hoe. Figured it was good enough since I'd been doing it that way for 8 years. Then a job last week, a retaining wall out in Grove City, my mortar was going off way too fast and the joints were gritty. The inspector flagged 3 spots and I had to cut them out. A guy on the crew let me run his corded paddle mixer with a round drum, just 5 minutes per batch on low speed, and the difference was night and day. The mix came out smooth with no dry pockets and it stayed workable for a good 45 minutes longer. I got the whole wall done without a single cut out and the inspector signed off the same day. My wrist and back don't hate me either. So for the guys still mixing on a board, what bucket size and rpm are you running? Thinking about buying my own but not sure if a drill is enough or if I need a dedicated mixer.
