Mixing lime putty by feel instead of by ratio fixed my cracking issue

I kept getting hairline cracks on repointing jobs around Chicago until I stopped following the bag and watched how the mortar slumped off my trowel, too stiff and it grabs, too loose and it sags. Has anyone else ditched the exact measurements and just adjusted for the brick porosity on site?
