Just hit 1,000 chimneys rebuilt, but I'm not doing the happy dance

Tbh, everyone talks about hitting a milestone like 1,000 or 500 like it's some big victory lap. But for me, hitting 1,000 rebuilt chimneys in the last 8 years around Akron just means I've seen 1,000 homes where the old work was done sloppy by guys who didn't give a damn about flashing or crown joints. I keep track because it reminds me how much bad brickwork is out there, not because I want a pat on the back. Anyone else feel like those numbers just make you more picky about your own joints, or is it just me?

My first 500 roofs taught me to be proud, the next 500 taught me to be honest. I keep a photo of every bad crown joint I've torn out and it's like a museum of other people's shortcuts. Those pictures do more for my own work than any certification ever did. Now I catch myself redoing a joint three times just because I know the next guy might post a photo of it someday. The numbers stopped being about counting jobs and started being about the standard I refuse to drop below. It gets lonely being the picky one, but my customers' roofs leak a lot less than the neighbors' ones.
